NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENT
Member - Technology Development Team – Combat Reconnaissance Platforms – 2 projects
1. Crystal Ball – Battalion Asset. The MPOS-2 Crystal Ball is a man portable optical sensor the size of a golf ball. During urban combat, an MPOS-2 can be deployed in a road intersection by an attached platoon level recon specialist using any of three delivery methods: rolling, throwing, firing from a rifle mounted grenade launcher. Gyroscopic action allows the device to self-level on any paved surface. A helmet-mounted heads-up display provides the operator with a 360-degree field of observation. Recon data gained can be used to adjust company direct/indirect fire operations.
2. Dragonfly – Division Asset. In launch configuration, the TUAV-D1A4 (tactical unmanned aerial vehicle) weighs two ounces and rests easily on the operator’s palm. The vehicle silhouette incorporates real insect features and is indistinguishable from an actual dragonfly beyond short range. The D1A4 carries a multi-role sensor package that includes a laser rangefinder. GPS software allows a Dragonfly operator to act as a forward observer for upper echelon artillery fire and to provide terminal guidance for precision directed ordnance. Dragonfly TUAVs can be used in groups to map terrain/triangulate combat objective coordinates or used individually to paint targets of opportunity.
COMBAT SERVICE
Darmoor Uprising – Scorpia: 22 BCH (-29 NCE)
During spring 22 BCH, three Marine Expeditionary Forces were mobilized to suppress a regional post election rebellion in Darmoor Province on Scorpia’s southern continent.
Marine strategy included an ambitious plan to cut insurgent communications by seizing a key road junction dominated by the mountain village Tur Malak. IV MEF conducted an assault from orbit and occupied Tur Malak in three hours.
Despite initial success, the plan proved overly optimistic. Darmoor militia units and irregular troops counterattacked and surrounded the Marine Force occupying Tur Malak. Isolated and outnumbered seven to one, IV MEF ground units fortified the village and adjacent ridge, preparing for extended combat.
While insurgent forces possessed superiority in numbers and raw firepower, Marine assets included terrain, accomplished junior officers, discipline, expert marksmanship. Assisted where possible with sorties from IV MEF aviation combat element, Marine ground units defended the position for eleven days, suffering heavy casualties, until relieved by elements of III MEF.
As a result of IV MEF’s heroic performance, the Darmoor Uprising failed.
