After a Long day working around the battlestar Atlantia's CIC, Lt. Samantha Martin finds herself in need of some time off. Meanwhile, Captain Joseph Inviere has recently sold all the precious metals and minerals from mining in the outer systems, and the cubits are burning a hole in his pocket. As the Two crew members find themselves in the Atlantia's Officers bar a few other pilots are playing a game of cards and soon Both the Lt. and the Captain are given a few drinks as the cards are dealt.

The day was already going slow as I cashed out the minerals from my last mining expedition. A Lousy 500 Cubits was all I got from the Atlantia. I was hoping for more, but hell I would take anything that I could get. I knew that I was not on the top of the list with the fleet anymore, and it would take a while to get back into the flow of things. So I thought that I would take it easy before I headed out again, maybe a few drinks, and maybe I could double up these 500 cubits into something that I could work with.
I was already on the other side of the ship before I decided what I was going to do, and I was feeling kinda thirsty (walking around a battlestar watching everyone working hard always made me want to drink) so I tried my luck in the officers club.
As I walked into the bar I could feel every eye in the place looking me over and sizing me up. I saw some pilots playing cards in a corner booth and I knew they were playing for money, but I didn't want to rush things so I took a seat at the bar and looked around a bit. Nothing but Lt's and No body Ensign's, no one to take cubits from and no one good looking enough to buy drinks for.
"Let me get a shot and a beer. Do you know when everyone starts to drop in??
The Bartender poured out a shot of whiskey and popped off the top of the bottle of beer and handed it to me. I quickly threw back the shot and sipped the beer as he spoke. He told me that the watch was almost over and that the other crew members would be coming in soon. I felt a little bit of relief, I continued to drink my beer and I waited for the other crew members to show up.

Finally! Samantha sighed heavily with relief as her shift in the CIC had come to an end for the day. Tomorrow would be just another day, but until then ... she was going to make the most of it. The woman had already decided that, to make the most of any second of life the Gods had given back to her. She placed her headset on the console and left the CIC in a quickened pace.
As she made her way down the halls of the Battlestar, Sam's fingers moved over the buttons of her uniform, tugging to undo them. That caught a few glances, as one Ensign nearly ran into a bulkhead trying to sneak a peek. She chuckled quietly and kept going, rounding the corner until she finally reached her destination: the Officer's bar. It was filled with mainly pilots, obnoxious ones at that! They were drinking and swearing up a storm as another hand of Triad was dealt.
Sam allowed her body to lean and rest against the bar top as she waved the bartender over. "What'll ya have, Aurora?" The husky looking man asked. She looked at him in surprise before even answering. No one had called her that in ages that she could remember, as most people had just gotten used to calling her Sam. "Ambrosia ... you can just leave the bottle with me." The Lieutenant smiled mischievously, she had a sketchy past when it came to booze ... hell, who didn't now days?
The bartender went to the back, grabbed a bottle of Ambrosia and a shot glass, and brought them back to the front. He left them on the bar for her and moved on to the next thirsty patron that entered. Sam took both, pulling the top off the bottle and taking a swig. Something caught her attention then... A man. She'd seen him before, down on the hanger deck. Damn, he had looked pretty good covered in grease. She grinned slight as she walked over, pulling out the stool beside him. "Mind if I join you?"
As she waited for an answer, the woman glanced over at the pilots in the corner briefly. She couldn't help but roll her eyes, and hope to the Gods she wouldn't have to put up with their drunk asses all night. Sam thought for a moment ... she didn't mind going to the brig for breaking a bottle or two over some idiot pilots head.

I had started to stare deeply at the bottle of beer that I was slowly drinking. It had a home made label and the bottle looked like it had been recycled a thousand times before, and by the way I was planning to drink tonight it will be recycled a few thousand more. I was feeling a little depressed and the time seemed to drag on. I didn't even see the woman approach until she was already seated.
"yeah...no worries...I can always use the company of a good looking woman like yourself.....but on one condition....you let me buy you a shot of this excellent whiskey.....It's not the best but it dose the trick...."
As She sat I noticed that she was looking over at the other pilots. A part of me felt a little jealous, but I quickly lost that feeling as I noticed that she rolled her eyes at them. I was silently wishing that she would be different than the other women in the fleet. Not that I was complaining, she was a vast improvement over the female pilots that were more like brothers in arms than someone that you would want to wake up next to in the morning.
I was not planing out much in my head and I knew that this was probably her off duty time so I didn't want to waste her time. I looked at the Bartender and gave him the heads up to pour out two more shots of his rot gut and he quickly obliged with a small smile. I could tell by her pins that she was a Lieutenant, but by her frame and delicate looks I couldn't tell if she was a combat pilot or some desk jockey so I didn't push the fact.
She was wearing her duty blues and was looking very, very good in them. I didn't even wear a uniform anymore, the only things that I had left besides my flight suit and tactical gear were a simple suit that I got off a dead man, and the black marine BDU's that were slowly wearing out. I could imagine that I looked like a no good miner and I probably still smelled like Viper grease. I took the shot glass and placed it in front of her before I raised mine up for a toast.
"Here's looking at you doll....."
I didn't even wait for her to drink before I drank mine. I knew that it seemed rude, but I was still feeling out of it and I was not sure if my mood was going to pick up. It was at this time that I looked at the woman's face for the first time. I was struck at how beautiful she was and I was taken back. To be honest, I had to look away before I seemed like a creep with a staring problem.
"So Whats your Story LT? Just here for kicks or are you looking for someone to take home?"
I poked fun, but a part of me wanted to get to know her better and my small talk was not the best. It had been years since I had the chance to slow things down and get to know someone and I hoped that it didn't show.

Raising an eyebrow as she accepted the shot, Sam raised the glass up and downed it quickly. She felt the hair on the back of her neck stand up as the liquid burned her throat. It took a few minutes before she decided to speak up. "My story? Hmm..." That was a question she'd rather avoid, since telling a complete stranger about your frakked up life wouldn't seem right ... not at the moment, anyway. She give the man a sly grin when he asked if she was looking for someone.
"Well ... are you offering? I've been stuck in the CIC all day, figured I could use a change of scenery." Sam winked and hoped he knew she was only kidding about the offer. She didn't want to come off as trashy, like some of the other women on other ships. Even though she was qualified to fly a viper, she frowned a bit thinking he might be more interested in one of the female pilots on the ship instead of some Lieutenant that stayed cooped up behind a communications console.
Sam picked up the bottle of Ambrosia from the bar and poured herself a shot, and then set the bottle back down between herself and the stranger. She downed the alcohol and took a minute to look over his features, trying to figure him out. Very good looking, she noted. He seemed like he didn't mind getting his hands dirty ... for some reason, that made her heart race. He seemed different from anyone else on the ship, like he had a rough past as well. That made the woman think of her own past.
She shook the thoughts from her mind and smiled. "I'm Sam, by the way," The Lieutenant said as she removed her duty jacket, trying to get more comfortable. No one seemed to mind, as she noticed others in the bar were more interested in their booze, playing cards, and messing around with the old jukebox in the corner. "So, what brought you to the Atlantia?"

I listened to the woman as she spoke, I was trying to act as cool as I could cause by his time I had recognized her as the Lt. that I saw on the Hangar deck, walking with the Col. Dualla. I really hoped that it was just a part of her orders, and that she didn't mention who I was to him. I knew that with the little stunt to rescue that rook of a Lt. everyone on the ship was looking for a reason to throw me into the brig.
"I've been stuck in the CIC all day, figured I could use a change of scenery."
I knew what it was like to be stuck in the CIC while all the action took place somewhere else, but I always thought that it was the safest place on the entire ship, so I was happy to hear that no matter what she would be safe, for the most part. I always looked out for the ladies that were close to me, it was a bad habit that got me into trouble plenty of times; and even though we just met, I knew in my heart that this Lt. had been through a lot. Call me weak, or just a softy for a lady in duty blues, I thought she might need someone to watch her back.
"The CIC huh?? Well that's good maybe we'll see each other more often since it's not as dangerous as fighting on the frontier. I've lost a lot of friends like that, and I would hate to loose such a pretty acquaintance such as you. "
I had lost to many people in the past that I couldn't stand losing another. From all the men and women on the Zephyr to every pilot under my command, it was too much to take. I leaned over slow like if I was going to whisper a secret into the Lt's ear and then I quickly grabbed the bottle and poured out a shot. "If you don't mind..."
"I'm Sam, by the way.....So, what brought you to the Atlantia?"
I looked over quickly before I took the shot of the bitter ambrosia. I thought quickly of what I might say. I had already seemed kinda rude or strange at the very least, and I didn't want to risk coming off as creepy or dull so I quickly poured out another shot for the both of us this time and placed the bottle between us once more. I took a step back and turned my back slightly.
"I'm just here to do something....Sam....trying to to my part.. I guess..Captain Joseph Inviere Reporting...mam...by you can all me Hydro...."

"Nice to meet you ... Hydro." Sam said as she held her hand out, shaking his. She smiled at the Captain, he seemed genuine, but she could tell he also no stranger to shameless flirting. She'd done her fair share though. "Yeah ... the CIC's not too dangerous. But, sometimes I'd rather be out there, flying around, ya know?" The Lieutenant downed her shot of ambrosia and poured another, finally loosening up. The sounds of the bar crowd brought back more memories, more from her clouded past...
It reminded her of the fun times she had in the Vulture Saloon, and on the Cerberus .... sharing drinks and laughs in the bar with Reaper, Gaffo, Ace, and Myth. At times, she wished things could be like the were back then. Everything seemed so simple. Hard to believe it was over seven years. And her daughter ... where would she be now? Sam shook her head and quietly mumbled a prayer in her native Tauron tongue. "Μαΐου οι Θεοί να σας κρατήσει ασφαλή." ("May the Gods keep you safe.") She brought the glass up to her lips and let the liquid move slowly down her throat.
She turned back to Hydro and smiled again. "The next rounds on me, Captain. Pick your poison." She nodded her head towards the various bottles behind the bar and grinned a bit, wondering what he would choose or where this innocent offer would go. Maybe it was just the alcohol kicking in, maybe not ... but she hoped that he didn't have anything else to do and might stick around for a while. Listening to the pilots in the corner, she wondered how good her new found friend was at cards.

"The next rounds on me, Captain. Pick your poison."
I gathered my thoughts for a second but her words were still ringing in my ears. "May the Gods keep you safe.", Who was she talking about? what did it have to do with her current situation? and why did she say it in Tauron? The more I thought about it the more intrigued I became, and I wanted to know more.
(In Tauron)"When you loose something in the sand, it is lost forever; If someone finds it, it is theirs to keep; unless you can prove it was yours..."
It was an old Ha La Tha proverb that was meant to ease the pain of love lost. My real mother had told it me when I was taken from my step sister and her family on Caprica. It never really helped but it was like a dark cloud with a silver lining; it was both the empathy needed to let go, and the encouragement to fight on. Gods, you have to love the Tauron way, in one breath not only do they tell you "hey get over it" but they tell you to go fight for what is yours at the same time.
"How about some whiskey? I think I need to liven up. I've been mining Ice for so long that I think I need something to melt the frost, but do you mind if we move to a table? I saw an empty one in the back..."
I knew I had let my curiosity get the best of me, I had effectively killed the mood, or so I thought. But like every good viper pilot knows, once you start thinking that your dead that's when you roll a hard six and wish for the best. I kicked the idea around in my head but before I could give myself a chance to back out I took a step forward and held out my arm like those old Virgon noblemen. I smiled and bowed my head then pointed the way with my free hand. I hoped to Athena that she got the joke and didn't think I was some crazy person.

Sam smiled as she slipped off the barstool. "That's fine with me." The bartender must have heard Hydro's request, as he came around quickly and left a bottle of the best whiskey the bar had to offer. She grabbed the bottle with one hand, and grinned at Hydro as he extended his arm jokingly. She took a hold of it in return as the two made their way back to one of the empty tables. Sam scooped up a deck of cards from one of the tables as they walked by, just in case.
She took a seat and got comfortable, thinking about what he had said. "When you loose something in the sand, it is lost forever; If someone finds it, it is theirs to keep; unless you can prove it was yours..." The woman noted that he had spoken in Tauron as well. She wondered if he was a Tauron native, Gods that would be nice. Pouring them both a drink, she waited to drink hers. "I've lost a lot, you know," Sam began, taking a small sip from her glass. She moved forward and then spoke in a lower tone. (In Tauron) "And I don't know about you, but I've never been one to share. Or give up easily." She joked and half smiled.
It was time to move away from the bad, and start having fun. She didn't want to make him feel awkward by whining about loss. It was actually a nice surprise that he wanted to move away from the bar and over to a more secluded area in the lounge. "So, Joseph ... what Colony did you call home?" That made her think of home, back on Tauron in Hypatia City. Her parents always tried to shield her from the violence there, but they also believed in the old Tauron way ... blood for blood.

She was from Tauron, things were defiantly looking up. There was always something about Tauron women that always drove me a little crazy. I saw that Sam had placed the deck of cards on the table so I swooped them up and started to shuffle them as I spoke.
"Well that makes two of us...When I was a child I would only share with my sister Gina, she was my only family on Caprica. But that Changed when I moved back to Tauron with my Real mother. But to answer your question, I'm a Tauron....blood for blood I'm Tauron.....so you know how we can be...How about a Game?"
I knew that this was an old trick from a Caprican friend of mine, but it always worked for him so I thought that I would give it a try. The game was a mix of School yard Truth or Dare, with a Drinking game that the Marines from Delphi would play when they either wanted to pick a fight or find a date. I started dealing out the triad cards face down like normal and once we both had five cards I placed the stack between us. I took another drink for courage and poured out two more shots for the both of us. About this time I would be drunk, but I guess the good company was keeping me focused.
"Ok....the rules are easy...The person with the higher card wins and the loser has to either, drink a drink, answer any question that the winner asks, or has to do something crazy like a dare or something....I know it's a little silly; but hey it always livens up an evening. You Game??"
I hoped that she would be cool with this Game, even though it was a little childish and kinda encouraged the fact that we might work up a buzz worthy of a Gold medal. But I knew it would be better than bringing up bad memories and the past, and hey maybe we both could have a little fun while getting to know each other.

"Game on!" Sam said with a sly grin as she picked up her cards. She watched on as he took another drink, impressed that he was holding his own unlike the younger officers who couldn't even finish off a bottle of Ambrosia. And he was Tauron ... that explained a lot. She took a quick peek at the cards, placing one on the table facedown.
"This is just like a game me and my .... my brother used to play back in the day." Back in the day ..... when Sam and her younger brother Tyler would steal a bottle of their parents cheap wine and grab the playing cards, although they seemed more interested in who could drink more. It was always a contest between the two. She smiled at that happy memory.
"So you have a sister? I had a younger brother, Gods rest his soul." She said in a more peaceful tone. After meeting this stranger, a fellow Tauron ... and making a new friend in the process, she decided it was time to let go of the past. Well, most of it, especially the bad. The good times and memories of loved one could remain, and always would. "Do you know anyone else from the Atlantia?" She asked, curiously.
Sam took a card from the deck and placed it with the others, raising a brow as she contemplated her next move. Whether she ended up drinking, answering a question, or anything else that came ... it was all in good fun. Plus, with the alcohol they had both consumed ... things could only go up from here. It was an interesting way to get to know someone. And she wanted to know more about the man.

I smiled wide when she spoke about her brother. It was nice to see her pick up a bit, and it was a good feeling to share a genuine moment with someone. She had a pretty smile and I was glad that I was there to see it. I was starting to feel the effects of the alcohol but I brushed off the haze hovering over my eyes and pulled out a Cigar.
"So you have a sister? I had one too, Gods rest her soul."
My thoughts ran back to Caprica in a Flash of painful memories mixed with cheerful one's and then finally the rage of loosing her to the Cylons. But I calmed myself down before I could give myself away or kill the mood once more. I took another sip of my warm beer and lit my cigar before I spoke.
"I hope you don't mind the smoke, but yeah I had a sister...after I left Caprica for Tauron I had to leave her behind. It's a long story but in a nut shell I had to leave to make sure she was ok and out of trouble..."
Once again I held back the details of her death just to save the mood. I placed my cards face down and readied myself for the first round of the game. If I lost I knew that I would have to keep my end of the deal and do whatever she wanted. I silently hoped that she would take it easy on me, but I looked forward to anything she said. It was nice to spend time with good people, and I wanted to savor every moment of it.
"Okay....draw.......4 Low......I showed you mine...now so me yours..."

She could see the pain written all over his face, in his eyes, when he spoke of his sister. Sam could tell he'd obviously lost possibly the closest person to him from his childhood. Nothing can replace that. She felt the same way with Tyler .... he had always considered his sister "one of the guys", and looked up to her. She could feel anger building inside, but forced herself to let it go, grabbing one of the shots and downing it quickly. Sam giggled at Hydro as he placed his cards on the table and looked up. Oh, I'll show you something, alright... With the alcohol taking affect, and a buzz slowly creeping up on her, she looked around hoping she hadn't said that out loud. "Not bad, not bad," The woman said as she eyed her own cards. She laid them down on the table and grinned at her opponent. "But I do believe I've got you beat. Prince high red, right?" Having never been very good at cards, she was amazed that she'd managed to remember a single hand of Triad. Her thoughts began to run wild, remembering the terms of the card game. "So," Sam waited for a minute, she could tell the alcohol was taking its toll on Hydro as well, even though he tried to hide it. "Show me some skin, Captain .... I dare ya." She held in another giggle, wondering if he would actually go for it. It was all just fun between the two of them for now anyway, as the bar had almost completely cleared out. How did she miss that? Wow .... he really had captured her full attention now apparently. "Come on," She paused momentarily as a hic-up escaped her mouth. "Don't be so shy!" As she waited, Sam shuffled the cards back together and put them back on the table. She would deal the next hand, after Joseph paid up of course. ( Triad - a few hands of Triad, for those who are wondering. )
