There's good news and bad news, "Battlestar Galactica" (2003) fans -- a movie is in the works, but it's not a continuation the Syfy series. Variety reports that "Transcendence" writer Jack Paglen has signed on with Universal to write the screenplay for a movie version of the franchise that will completely re-imagine the story, which will presumably at least revolve around humans battling the Cylons for Earth. Universal's executive vice president of production Scott Bernstein and director of development Jay Polidoro will oversee this version, but there are no other details available at this time. The two previous versions, the two-season 1978 original and the critically-acclaimed reboot that launched as a miniseries in 2003 and continued on for four seasons beginning in 2004, share many core characters -- Commander Adama, Apollo, Starbuck, Col. Tigh, Boomer, Athena, Baltar -- but there is no word yet if the movie version will center around them or invent an entirely new cast of characters. Which would you prefer to see, fans? Or do you think a "Battlestar Galactica" movie is a bad idea either way? Just seeing this now, and all I can say is: "They should have had us help write the screen play." It would be better without a doubt.

The trailer for the new "Battlestar Galactica" movie was unveiled at the San Diego Comic Con on Thursday, July 24, as part of the usual excitement and revelations slated for the big science fiction and fantasy convention.
The International Business Times' schedule of events set the viewing of a trailer for the new "Battlestar Galactica" movie for Thursday morning. Called "The Legacy and Return of 'Battlestar Galactica,'" the panel included actors Richard Hatch, Luciana Carro and Jamie Bamber along with Dr. Kevin Grazier, the show's science consultant, and producer Alec Peters. They discussed the new movie and showed a trailer.
Ever since the news of a "Battlestar Galactica" movie, fans have been worried about what the new movie would be like. According to Wired, one of the greatest issues is the alleged "reimagining" of the series. However, since some of the actors involved in the show spoke about the movie, it seems likely some characters will return.
Aside from the movie, two "BSG" actors appeared in a project called the "Titans of Comic-Con," which tried to bring back the convention to its comic book roots, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Grace Park and Katee Sackhoff appeared as Luke Skywalker and Hans Solo, respectively, in the "Star Wars" section of the mixed-media project. Various other stars recreated classic characters.

New 'Battlestar Galactica' movie will completely reimagine the sci-fi tale
Universal is preparing to start work on a Battlestar Galactica movie. Variety says the studio is planning to completely reimagine the sci-fi story — in which space-bound humans fend off the attacks of nefarious cybernetic Cylons as they try to find a new home — just five years after the four-season Syfy TV show drew to a close. The planned film would mark the second time Battlestar Galactica has been rebooted after the original show aired in 1978.
Jack Paglen, the writer of the upcoming Transcendence, has agreed to pen the reboot's screenplay. Paglen is a hot property for studios wanting to create sci-fi at the moment: he's also slated to write Ridley Scott's Prometheus sequel. Glen Larson, who worked on the 1970s TV series, will produce the film, but there's no confirmation yet on who'll take on the role of director. Bryan Singer was originally attached to a Battlestar Galactica movie project in 2011, but the production was put on hold in 2013 after the director committed to working on new X-Men movies. Having agreed to direct 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse, Singer is unlikely to have time to work on developing a new Battlestar.
