The Engineering crews were watching the FTL, the gravity generators, and the internal structure closely. Galactica had taken weeks to repair fully after her drop over New Caprica. Marauder was a lot less massive, but she was scaled down in FTL as well as other systems, and the backbone was lighter. Proportionately the damage could be just a severe. The Captain had ordered the landing, everything had to be ready to launch.
Carl could hear the guns firing as well as feel them through the floor. The structure of the ship anchored the turrets, and though they had some shock-absorption, they could still feel it. A trained ear could tell when there was trouble, and Carl could not hear that. Every shot was clean.
The announcement came over to prepare for enemy contact and to repel boarders. Savage has his sidearm and it had the requisite armor-piercing bullets. His responsibility, though, was first to keeping the ship working. He trusted the Marines and the gunners to do their job as he did his. Whether they simply climbed out or Jumped again, the Engineering crew would have it ready as the FTL began to recharge the capacitors in case needed.

Hands behind his back, James casually strolled the corridor along the periphery of the ship. His metal-shod feet clanked against the metal deck plates. As he walked, he read the placards and watched the displays. Of greatest interest was the layout of the ship. Lifeboats were marked in bright yellow. He also noted on the deck layout where the heavily armored areas were. Besides the CIC, the sickbay in the middle of the ship was heavily shielded. It's environmental equipment would be self-contained and well protected. If the rest of the ship were to lose hull integrity, Sickbay would automatically seal if this ship were built to the same specs as Colonial vessels.
James noticed as well that a large number of pods were incorporated into the sickbay section, some large enough for patients. It was beginning to look more encouraging all the time.

"Stop right there."
The bronze man strode forward, boots thumping on the deck. The man turned around, his own feet making metallic clanking sounds as if he were shod in steel boots. When Carl got a good look at the front, he saw the extent of the clear plastic cap that covered the right half as well as the back of the intruder's head. That, and the metallic clanking, suggested to Savage that these were some sort of prosthetic devices used in treatmeng of injuries. That didn't matter, though. The man was not on the Engineering Deck with either approval or escort, and that meant that he had to be challenged. Why the rest of the crew hadn't done so would be dealt with later.
"I'm Chief Engineer Savage, and you are on my Engineering Deck. You will tell me who you are and why you are before I have the Captain clap you in irons in the brig." Savage had become stricter since his days back aboard Galactica with Clayton Dualla and Harry Harrison, as well as Deck Chiefs Andrews and McCall. Back then, he'd been an engineer. It wasn't that he was not a leader: he and Harry ran the Engineering Division aboard Galactica under the quiet Andrews and the affable McCall. He would have stopped the stranger just as quickly back then. Besides, he had his own history of leadership within his chosen profession. Now, though, Engineering was his. More responsibility, more authority. He could have threatened to airlock the man and could have well gotten away with it. He didn't want those kind of decisions, though.

James turned, and a warm smile lit up his face. He took a step forward, exaggerating his limp. "Excuse me, old wounds from a Cylon attack." James offered his right hand. "I've been admiring the way this class of ship's been taken and upgraded so well. I'm a bit of an engineer myself, and I know good engineering when I see it." James decided that the best way to deal with the fellow was to show that they had some common ground. Engineers were pretty much alike in that way. It was a passion. It had been with James as well, at least at the start. That was before the other opportunities had presented themselves. Most engineers wouldn't understand that, but James knew enough to know that this guy might.
"My name is Drexl, and I must admit that the name of the great Doc Savage is familiar even out here, at least in engineering circles. Your development of the 'mercy pistol' has led to lives being saved." Though neither James or any of his subordinates wielded the LNL - Lethal/Non-Lethal guns that could fire either standard slugs or anesthetic pellets. When they shot, it was to kill. Though Savage's design had made it into some law-enforcement circles, they still couldn't stop a Cylon skin job with them. And, in some of the circles James dealt, living could mean blabbering, and that could mean death to the one being talked about. It wasn't going to be him - ever.
"I do thank you for your hospitality, what with the Marauder rescuing us from Terra." There was no need to hide his identity. He was too conspicuous, and his prosthetics would be noticed and talked about. Savage may or may not know that the refugees were all high-position members of Terran military and government. He would not mention that. If and when Savage found out, James could pass it off as modesty. For now, though, he was revealing enough.

Doc stopped to ponder the man for a moment while watching his every move. He knew about the rescue mission. Captain Markus had briefed all if his department heads prior to the operation, so Savage was aware that the man was aware that the refugees would all be high-powered government or military officials. He was not dealing with a civilian who'd just lost their home or a military person who'd lost their company. This was someone from the top. That didn't mean the person was any different, but he wouldn't just pass them off to a crewman. He wanted Drexl out of his area. Drexl had commented that he understood space engineering. The last thing Savage needed was some planetbound wonk telling him how to run his ship.
"Mister Drexl, I think I'm going to take you to the Captain. He should be the one taking care of his VIP guests I'm sure he'll find you suitable quarters if he hasn't already. Please come with me." Carl motioned to an engineer to step in behind them, and the bronze man led the procession to Officer Territory.

The bronze man walked quickly onto the Engineering deck, riding boots striking the steel plate surface.
"Rig for atmosphere entry!" he barked. He didn't have to relay the Captain's order to prepare for a bumpy one. The Engineering crew always did that. Whether it be steep angle of attack, FTL jump into atmosphere, or even vertical dive, they would have Marauder ready for whatever was commanded. The ship's ungainly appearance belied the capabilities contained within. It could maneuver with craft far smaller, and could fight at point-blank range with ones far larger. She'd been modified and upgraded so many times and so extensively that she was a class of her own.
A Damage Control team quickly passed on their way to station. Damage Control was part of Engineering, and Doc had put them on Red Alert even though the Captain hadn't called it. To Doc, it was just a formality. They knew that it was time to leap back into the fire, and they were ready well in advance to stop any fires that broke out aboard ship. The FTL's coils were being powered up as the induction shuttles fed their electrons into the super capacitors. The shuttles, vastly smaller versions of the house-sized ones in a Battlestar, would have the FTL in a pre-ready condition, prepared to Jump the ship at a moment's notice. Technicians monitored the new ablative-Carbolite blast panels which doubled as re-entry tiles. Railguns as well as Tylium-fusion-charged units and even conventional ammo weapons were taken off-safety. The ship was ready to go back to the war.

"CIC to Engineering, we have a Raptor coming aboard."
Doc called out a series of orders halting the preparations for entry. The opening of the landing bay would halt progress until the Raptor was aboard and it had retracted. It wasn't as much as Galactica's pods, but it was required with the powerful Tylium drive engined in the quad that comprised the stern of Marauder. He was sure that the Captain would be displeased. Sparks may end up on kitchen duty for this.

"Double time," Doc said smoothly. His voice still carried above the din of activity. Doc seldom shouted; his voice had the power to carry. His dedicated Engineering crew did as he ordered; they shifted into an even higher gear. Every readout was watched and studied for any anomalies that might signal a departure from the ordered descent angle or the degradation of a critical system or piece of equipment. When the steep dive had been ordered, additional eyes were placed on the monitors and the third shift was called in. Engineering was running at Condition One; all three shifts were manning their posts. Extra damage control crews had been dispatched to the areas most likely to protest the demands that were put upon them. The arrival if the uninvited visitor had placed Marauder behind the curve, and the only way to catch up was to dive more sharply into atmosphere. The vessel would be subjected to far greater stress, both thermal and mechanical. Savage and his crews would be ready for it, though.

Joseph called to the Engineering crew, Savage in particular. He may be the Captain, but this was Doc's ship. Still, Joseph needed a bit more power.
"Doc, give me all you got down there. DRADIS has now picked up a few bogeys not far off from our port stern. I want to get on the deck before they realize who or what we are."

Joseph was too busy trying to get his ship safely to the surface to respond to either Commander Admiral or Admiral Yogi, although he would do so once the ship was secure. Looking at the Helmsman, Joseph asked for a status update.
"Helm, status report."
"Captain, we are inbound and fifty meters from surface, thirty, ten, CONTACT!"
The ship made a dull thud sound as it lightly touched the planets surface. Joseph looked around the Bridge. Grabbing the comm, he called out to every department on the ship.
"This is the Captain. We are on the surface now. Okay people, by the numbers, let's secure the ship. Engineering, keep the fires burning in case we have to depart in a hurry. Nav, FTL's are to be kept at the ready. Comm, keep your ears open for friendlies and not-so-friendlies. Security, prepare for disembarkation of passengers. Marines, stand by to form up combat teams."

Doc chastened a couple of young techs for gawking at Acheron's image on the monitor.
"I could show you a dozen ways to disable that ship. She's big, she's powerful, but she isn't almighty. Don't ever sell Marauder short because she's a cruiser and not a Battlestar. And remember, that behemoth can't make point five past lightspeed. We can."
Carl Savage understood a battlestar intimately, having served for several years aboard Galactica before her Commander reassigned him to serve in place of Marauder's Chief Engineer, who had been killed. That knowledge had been used to make Marauder more able to survive and strike against one of the Colonial capital ships if need be. That same preparation make it more survivable and deadly in the presence of Cylon base stars. Harry Harrison and Clayton Dualla would agree with him. Ton for ton, The ship he was on was the best fighting ship of her size. He aimed to keep it that way.
Captain Markus knew it too, and had just used that capability. The direction they had approached Acheron allowed for the maximum number of oblique departure vectors if it had been necessary to escape quickly.

When Clayton had left for Terra, Doc had taken his leave and returned by another shuttle to the Marauder. It was a tri-winged vessel, with lower wings that folded up to rest parallel to the enormous vertical tail. When they had left the hangar, the wings folded down to their cruise position. Doc saw the attitude thrusters on them, and expected the tail to have identical ones. Marauder did not have a shuttle bay tall enough for him, so Doc had to launch from an airlock and drift across. The crew had been spot-on with their aim, though, and he'd hit the bullseye of the open airlock in the side of Marauder. The Drexl shuttle had heeled over and accelerated away, being joined by a pair of huge tri-lobed fighters.
When the Drex Star had fired its main weapon at the Cylon fleet, it had played havoc with the wireless as well as electronics aboard Marauder. The energy in that beam had been off the scale, and even with minimum leakage, it had fried sensitive electronics. The full Engineering department had joined Damage Control in putting out the fires and isolating the overwhelmed circuits. He had made his way up to the Bridge with the Damage Control chief, who worked for Engineering.
"It will be several hours before we replace and repair the overloaded circuitry, Captain," the bronze man stated in deceptively soft tones. His ship had been damaged by the eight-hundred-kilo gorilla of space. When he next met with Drexl, he would present the bill.
