Avalon, also known as Alpha Site, is a habitable planet in a solar system 100 light years from Terra. It was discovered and established jointly by Colonials and Terrans as a back up site in the event of a full scale Cylon nuclear attack or invasion. It's current population is around 100,000 people, with new inhabitants constantly arriving.

Discovered by a joint Terran-Colonial-Gondawan mission to find a habitable planet that could support mankind some 10 years after the Colonial Fleet returned to the Terran system some twenty-plus years ago. It has been the best kept secret for the past 10 years. The current population is approximately 100,000 people. At this time, there are no Colonial Cylons residing there.
The planet sits in a solar system 100 light years from Terra. The solar system does contain one other planet that lies within the habitable zone of the systems star and is habitable although the temperature on that planet is cooler by about 40 degrees on average.
Avalon has a very rich and bountiful flora and fauna system with many plants being of similar or exact species as found on Terra and the 12 Colonies.
For the past 10 years, ships have been quietly and secretly transporting people, supplies, equipment, seeds and livestock to Avalon, as the inhabitants refer to it. In official records, it is known as the Alpha Site but no reference to its location is ever mentions in any official or unofficial records. Only certain merchant ships are used and only those personnel know the jump coordinates to make the 1 year journey from Terra.
There is a moderate military presence there as there is no way for the Fleet to get there in time should the Cylons ever stumble upon the planet.
There is a medium sized industrial capability on the planet with foundries and mills and manufacturing facilities however, all large industrial equipment is transported from Terra to Avalon, with the eventual goal of the planet becoming fully self-sufficient.
There is an indigenous animal population on the planet with similar types of species found on Terra or the 12 Colonies however there are no indigenous people on Avalon.

Regarding Avalon:
Having a large moon is thought to be a very significant factor in a planet having a stable climate.
Having tectonic activity is thought to be a factor in having a carbon cycle that facilitates Earth-like life.
It might be good to incorporate these aspects.
Hope this is the right place to post this...

Yes, any additions to the planets make-up will be helpful. Good to see you Vulture Patrol

Well, since this is sort of my forte, having once been a physicist, I'll continue my "rant"...
Another stabilizing factor, at least in the best models of solar systems, is the presence of one or more giant planets outside the orbit of the Goldilocks zone...
...Next we should consider geography, and how that affects how societies function:
Do we consider groups living on islands? And how far apart are these? Could make a difference...
Or is there one large continent where everyone lives? Things would be different from the above...
Is there an orbital infrastructure? A presence on the moon? Orbital infrastructures are costly. For the small number of people, there must be uber-mechanization. And the only use for orbital stuff is for transport to other bodies in the system. Maybe space mining? NOT for transporting materials between settlements - that has to go by ship or rail or road....
One other thing about geography, this time relating to climate. Earth's climate is HUGELY impacted by the existence of the Himalayas. If those mountains weren't there, our climate would be rather different...
Big mountain ranges make for interesting stories. Our colonists' defensive posture would be different if there are mega mountain ranges, compared to if they lived on relatively flat land... you know, more dramatic?
